Appreciating the ordinary

Lately, things have felt a bit ‘off’.

There’s a lot going on in the world, and I’ve noticed that when life feels uncertain, I naturally start looking outward more; scrolling, comparing, wondering if I should be further along or doing something differently. And every time, I have to bring myself back to what’s already right in front of me – the ordinary joys of the everyday.

Because most of life isn’t made up of big, defining moments but if we’re constantly chasing something better, or trying to measure up to what we’re seeing around us, we end up missing the most important moments of all.

Comparison plays a big part in that. You can know you’re only seeing a filtered version of someone else’s life and still feel like you’re falling short in your own. I’ve found that the most helpful thing isn’t trying to reason your way out of that feeling, but simply stepping away from it for a while (I’ve recently been using the app BePresent to reduce my screentime). When you do, even briefly, something changes. You start to see your own life a bit more clearly again.

And in that space, you begin to notice things would have passed you by before – including the little moments of spiritual connection…the small moments of progress. The way you handled something differently this time. The fact that you’re still trying, still showing up, still wanting things to feel better.

That counts for more than you think.

So I’ve been trying to focus more on the smaller, specific moments in my day. The ones that are easy to overlook, but actually make life feel full when you pay attention to them.

Because when everything feels uncertain, it’s often those ordinary moments that bring you back to yourself.
